STEM@WS

From the start of 2017 Whakarongo School is embarking on a project to develop and implement a comprehensive STEM programme in our school.

What is the STEM education?

STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education. STEM is however an Learning Approach where these areas meet and intersecting knowledge and skills awake into lateral thinking which in turn develops problem solving and innovation. Creativity and innovation should be the main thrust of STEM Education.

We focus on these subject areas together not only because the skills and knowledge in each discipline are essential for student success, but also because these fields are deeply intertwined in the real world and in how students learn most effectively.

Why STEM?

This approach to education is designed to revolutionize the teaching of subject areas such as mathematics and science by incorporating technology and engineering into regular curriculum by creating a “meta-discipline.”

STEM Education encourages a curriculum that is driven by problem-solving, discovery, exploratory learning, collaboration, communication, research and require students to actively engage a situation in order to find its solution. These skills are critical for our kids and their future!

Our Programme:

We are developing a 2 prong approach: We will develop core skills and knowledge in specific areas (Electronics, Science, Coding and Robotics) through a structured programme. On top of this we will build our STEM Units where we use Computational Thinking and the Engineering Design Process to solve problems and come up with creative solutions.
